Lumbar Yard Ep.3 | Exercises to Help Lower Back Pain

Dr. Robert and Dr. K are back for the third episode on low back pain and recovery. This episode talks about training good movement patterns to get away from pain with opposing gravity. They start with the side position from the last episode and lift the hips up and back down. The next exercise is on all fours and raise up off the ground and flexing the back. The exercises look easy, but they are challenging when you have back pain. It’s important to breathe during the exercises and learn to do them accurately to get rid of low back pain.

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!!!

Nicole talks about wrapping up the year. She likes to reach out to patients at the end of the year to see what they would like to change or see in the clinic. One of the things they are hearing is more help with nutrition. Nicole and Dr. K will be back in a couple of weeks with a big announcement for 2021.

Dive Deeper Into Bio-Individual

Dr. Robert and Dr. K talk about the lower back, reminding viewers of the three types of movement for the back. Tension means the back muscles aren’t relaxed enough. The exercises work on getting horizontal to relax the back. Get on all fours with the back stable and flexing the low part of the back. The patient flexes and extends the low back with a small movement. Then, they add hip flexion and extension. The next step is to get on one side with legs bent and separated to open up the lower back. It’s important to breathe from the belly to help with the movements. Do a few of the movements if you sit a lot or have some pain and/or stiffness.

What Is Telemedicine? | How It Works

Nicole talks about telemedicine, the wave of the future. She can work with people all over the country. She does the same thing in telemedicine that she would do in person. It works for busy people and those who can’t get to a clinic. They know eating healthy is important but they can’t travel, which makes telemedicine with Nicole the perfect option.

Lumbar Yard Ep.1 | Relaxing the Lower Back

Dr. Robert Hedeen and Dr. Cameron Khavari talk about the low back in this video. Most people think that the low back must be strengthened if they are experiencing pain. Instead, they should relax it. The three planes of movement include moving front to back, side to side, and rotation. A person should be able to do all three without pain. There is good stress and bad stress on the back. Good stress is exercise, while bad stress is sitting in a chair all day. It’s important to know how you’re loading the disc no matter what you’re doing. You can end up with pain in the leg or elsewhere from overloading the back. One exercise anyone can do is a press-up. They lay down and push back with their arms off the floor. This works the back of the disc after sitting for several hours at a time where you load the front of the disc.

Healthy Holiday Cookies | Protein Cookies

Nikola talks in this video about how to bake for the holidays and still be healthy. She said the most important thing is to remember protein. The sugar cookies she shows has protein in them. You can substitute part of the flour with protein powder. Protein slows down the metabolization of sugar, which prevents the blood sugar from spiking. Nikola also says that you can cut the sugar in half of a recipe. Her third tip is to use gluten-free flour, such as tapioca or coconut flour. The result is a healthier recipe that still tastes good.

What to Expect When you Visit a Modern-Day Therapist

People wonder what they should expect when they go to a new therapy or chiropractor’s office. Chiropractors may specialize in certain areas while physical therapy can also vary based on what the therapist does. Dr. K tells the audience what they should expect from an office. It starts with your goals. Sometimes that may be just to get pain relief while others will focus on getting to the root of the problem. In the second case, the therapists should be trained to use different methods of treatment. Look for someone who has worked on a variety of injuries and body parts. They should be someone who uses different passive therapies with active therapies. How much time they spend with you will also give you a good indication of what they will do. Quick pain relief may take only 5 or 10 minutes while someone who is working on dealing with the root issue may spend 40 minutes to more than an hour.

5 Tips to Stay Healthy During the Holidays!

Nicola shares her five favorite tips on how to be healthy during the holidays. She starts out by saying it takes 3 times to make a habit, so don’t do something unhealthy 3 days in a row. Another tip is to lower stress and not start the day with your phone. The third tip is all about using portion control. The fourth tip is to be smart about your sweets and add protein collagen powder in recipes with flour. The last tip is to fast and start slow if you have never done it. Always ask your doctor if you haven’t fasted before.

What a First Back Treatment Looks Like

Dr. Hedeen and Nicola demonstrate what to expect when facing your first exam and treatment for back pain. He first watches the patient move around, then works with the ball and socket joints. He checks certain areas of tissue and evaluates range of motion. He looks for restrictions along the leg and foot. He looks for symmetry between the two legs, which may cause excess stress on joints and muscles because the patient compensates for differences. He also checks breathing because back pain can cause issues with using the abdominals. When he determines that there’s tightness, he performs exercises to open up the hip. Tight hips can cause stress on the back. After the exercises, he uses a treatment on the back to increase blood flow. Dr. Ian continues with more exercises to continue opening up the hips.

Why Does My Lower Back Hurt?

One of the reasons for low back pain is we don’t train our bodies in the correct way. Sucking the stomach in causes muscles in the back to be too tight. Instead, fill up the belly with pressure because it stabilizes the back. Nicola is the spine in the demonstration and Dr. K is the stomach with Dr. Hadeen as the back muscles. In this demonstration, when there is no pressure in the stomach, there is no stability when the body moves. The spine becomes irritated and starts to ache, which can become arthritic or bring pain down the leg. It’s important to practice correct breathing from the belly using the entire diaphragm.

Dive Deeper Into Bio-Individual

A lot of professionals use traditional methods to lose weight, but TriMotus uses individual testing to create a unique plan that works for each person. They take raw data and find out more about a person’s body handles various components, such as caffeine or sleep. The goal is to find weight loss that can be sustained over a lifetime. Dr. K and Nicola talk about how nutrigenomics can help determine the best nutrition and diet for each person based on how different types of food affect a person. They plan to incorporate more nutrigenomics into their videos to educate the audience.

What is Bio-Individuality?

Nicola talks about Bio-Individuality. She is a nutritional therapy practitioner and helps people overcome nutritional challenges. She uses nutrition to help heal certain health conditions. Her approach is to use whole foods and to find out a person’s bio-individuality. She learns how a body reacts to different foods to determine what foods are necessary to a person’s health. Bio-individuality helps someone learn how a person handles different nutrients and foods to determine what they can eat for their goals. She teaches her patients how their bodies work and how to achieve their goals through nutrition. One tip she gives is to pay attention to how each food you eat makes you feel.

Your History Is Causing Your Back to Hurt

Low Back and Core Exercises People have been taught to suck in their stomach, but it doesn’t really work. It can put pressure onto the back, and the diaphragm doesn’t get lowered where it belongs. The exercise demonstrated in the video has the person lying on their back with knees bent at 90 degrees. They should inhale into their stomach instead of stopping at the diaphragm. Use it in between exercise sets. Dr. K says that often when you see a person with a six-pack, they also have back problems because they have been taught wrong about how to hold their posture, especially in exercise.
